“Universal Soldier” from Hanwha Defense or as an air defense system will hit an enemy tank

South Korea’s defense industry, in an effort to best meet any consumer demand in mobile tactical air defense systems, is creating an export model of the Biho II modular short-range / short-range self-propelled anti-aircraft system. About its unique features – in the material Defense Express

South Korea’s armaments are now increasingly popular in the world and successfully compete with similar models of technologically advanced countries, including USA, Germany, etc.

At the same time, the South Korean defense industry pursues an active export policy and tries to meet all the demands of consumers of military products. He creates special export samples based on modern weapons in the South Korean Armed Forces, which are sometimes very different from the originals and even have better characteristics and efficiency.

This was confirmed by the ongoing EUROSATORY 2022 exhibition. There were presented export versions of the K2 tank (K2NO for Norway and K2PL for Poland), K21 infantry fighting vehicle (AS21 Redback for Australia), K806 / K808 armored personnel carrier (Tigon), K9A2 self-propelled howitzer (for Great Britain). But this trend was most fully manifested during the creation of the Biho II air defense export system (based on Hybrid Biho).

Biho II is a modular self-propelled short-range / short-range air defense system, in which by combining components (weapons, sensors, chassis / base) you can get an air defense system of this class that meets any customer requirements.

ZHRK Hybrid Biho (based on the Biho II system) won the Russian tender of the Russian complexes “Tunguska” and “Pantsir”, which indicates the high technological capabilities of the defense industry of South Korea.

Armed Forces K30 Biho entered service in 1999, weighed 26.5 tons, dimensions 6.77x3x4.05, crew of 4 people. min., ammunition 300 rounds per gun), has a radar, electro-optical sensor and thermal imager, the tower is mounted on an extended base armored personnel carrier K200 (520 hp engine, speed 65 km / h, range 500 km). In 2013, the Armed Forces began to upgrade to the level of ZHRK Hybrid Biho with the installation of 4 SAM Shingung (launch range up to 7 km).

The Biho II air defense system was created by Hanwha Defense around a modular turret, which can be equipped with a 3-coordinate target detection radar, electro-optical sensor and additional tracking radar designed to detect small missiles, drones and mortar mines, or to fire artillery shells that may be too small or too fast to be detected by electro-optical sensors.

All sensors and their mounts on the Biho II must be modular, with the possibility of different configurations for different roles, including radar towers or electro-optical sensors only.

The new tower is also designed to accommodate various guns. The Biho II can be fitted with 30-mm, 35-mm or 40-mm guns, and additionally a laser, depending on the customer’s wishes. The Biho II missile part is also designed as a modular, with short-range SAM, short-range SAM and even ATGM, presented as options that can be installed on either side of the tower in 1-2 capsules of 2-4 missiles. Variable weapons can include only guns, only missiles, or guns and missiles together.

One of the configurations shows the Biho II system as a tracked vehicle, 2 capsules of 4 AIM-9X Sidewinder anti-aircraft missiles are mounted on the tower (without a cannon). Another configuration is mounted on the chassis of the 8×8 Tigon armored personnel carrier and includes a cannon and 2 capsules (1 with 4 Stinger / Shingung missiles and 1 with 4 AIM-9X missiles). Biho-II can fire at point-blank range while driving.

One of the variants of Biho II (on the chassis of the 8×8 Tigon armored personnel carrier) has the following characteristics: weight 30 tons, crew of 3 people, dimensions 7.8×3.05×3.95 m, speed 100 km / h, range 800 km, main armament ), additional armament: 2-8 short-range / short-range anti-aircraft missiles, auxiliary armament (ATGM or laser, as an option), main sensor: 3-coordinate reconnaissance radar, additional sensor (radar against drones, NUR, shells, mines), auxiliary sensor (electro-optical, optional).

Biho-II is currently planned to be produced only for export. It is planned to offer them to the United States, Canada, India and the UAE.

However, Biho II has not yet been created. Although such a modular system may look good on paper and in presentations, it has not yet been proven whether it really works. Assembling different configurations can be challenging, despite the integrated and networked nature of modern electronic systems.

However, the concept and experience of creating a modular air defense system Biho II may be of interest to the defense industry of Ukraine.

  1. If you can get a hand on a few hundreds of their K-9 self-propelled howitzers the war will end rather quickly. They have 1300 of them in their arsenal.
