Spain ready to supply Leopard tanks and anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine – El Pais

Spain is ready to hand over to Ukraine anti-aircraft missile systems and Leopard battle tanks.

According to European Truth , the Spanish newspaper El Pais writes about this , citing government sources.

“According to government sources, Spain is ready to make a qualitative leap in Ukraine’s military support against the Russian invasion. it is said in the article.

According to the publication, the Spanish Ministry of Defense is already completing supplies to Kyiv of batteries of Shorad Aspide short-range anti-aircraft missile systems, which the Spanish army has replaced with another, more advanced system.

The shipment of the system, developed by the European missile company MBDA, awaits the conclusion of negotiations through the group in Stuttgart, which is responsible for coordinating military aid to Ukraine.

The Spanish government is also ready to supply Ukraine with Leopard A4 battle tanks, which have been in reserve for ten years at the Spanish army base in Zaragoza.

These tanks are part of a batch of 108 used units that Germany sold to Spain in 1995 before a contract to produce Leopard in Spain.

According to sources, about 40 tanks can be repaired and handed over to the Ukrainian army, but warn that this requires some modernization work by industry, which is unlikely to carry out this work at a time of growing military spending in Europe.

In addition, Spain offered Ukraine to teach the military to handle these battle tanks. The training will initially take place in Latvia, where the Spanish army has deployed a contingent of 500 soldiers with six Leopard 2E tanks as part of NATO’s operation.

At the second stage, the training of Ukrainian tankers will take place in Spain, sources add.

A proposal for anti-aircraft systems and training of tankers was voiced during a visit to Kyiv on April 21 by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, but due to the complexity of the operation, negotiations have been going on for a long time.

After his visit to Spain , a ship with a new cargo of weapons for Ukraine, carrying 200 tons of ammunition and other materials, left for Poland.
