And how much will such a format of “hidden mobilization” cost the economy of the Russian Federation
Institute for the Study of War (ISW) that the authorities of the Russian Federation have launched a campaign to form “volunteer battalions” to be formed by each of the 85 “federal subjects” of the aggressor country. A demonstrative element – money for the maintenance of fighters of such formations should be allocated by the regional authorities, from their own treasury.
Such “hidden mobilization” on the territory of the Russian Federation started in June-July 2022. At the moment, 13 “subjects” of the Russian Federation are already involved in this mobilization campaign, forming 21 “volunteer” units with the number of battalions or regiments. The informal leadership here is held by Chechnya, which is preparing to send another four new battalions of “TikTok soldiers” to the war against Ukraine.
If we take the leadership according to the size of the formation that should be formed, then the leadership here belongs undoubtedly to Moscow, which attempted to create a regimental-level unit, which will be called accordingly – “Sobyaninsky Regiment”.
According to some sources, the formation of this regiment was entrusted to one of the militants of the occupied Donbas, Roman Vysotsky. But whether they will send the “Sobyansky Regiment” to the East of Ukraine is still unknown, the ISW authors point out. We, as Defense Express, would like to add that since there is evidence that the combat coordination of the “Sobyanin regiment” should take place at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod region of the Russian Federation, it should not be ruled out that this “regiment” can be used precisely to demonstrate the threat of an invasion of Ukraine from the North
The idea of the Rashists to form the rear support battalion “Seym” in the Kursk region is also included in the same canvas “demonstrating the threat from the North”. Which, obviously, will act as an auxiliary for the units of the Russian army standing on the border with Sumy Oblast.
There are examples of other “goodies” that demonstrate the “hybrid” logic of the Russian army’s attempts to replenish its ranks. For example, the authorities of the Primorsky Territory announced the creation of the “Tiger” battalion, which will be part of the 155th Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet. Rashists are going to recruit men aged 50-60 to create “Tiger”. Although such a contingent would be more logical to directly “pour” into the staff of the 155th brigade, without creating a new structural unit.
North Ossetia has already formed and sent its “Alania” battalion, equipped with rare T-62s , to fight against the Armed Forces . And in this example, the Rashists demonstrated the following logic: since it is necessary to remove from storage the equipment of Khrushchev’s time, it is better to immediately recruit the contingent that knows how to use such rare “armor”, instead of retraining conscripts. And it is better to immediately divide such craftsmen into separate units to fight on Khrushchev-era armored vehicles. However, there is a nuance that “break down” in the most insidious way can be not only ancient equipment, but also its not young crews, because the age is not the same.
There are no significant details on other racist benefits, including Kadyrov’s new “tick-tock army” battalions.
In general, the picture looks as follows. At the moment, about 10,000 people have already been recruited into the Rashist “dobrobats” in 1.5 months. The authors of ISW assume that if all regions of the Russian Federation carry out their plan for “hidden mobilization”, then the Kremlin will recruit up to 35,000 “cannon fodder” in total, for the maintenance of which at least 100 million dollars will be required from regional budgets every month, without costs from the national defense budget of the Russian Federation. But – “if they carry out the plan.”
How significant are the figures of 10,000 and 35,000 enemy “bayonets” – we can compare as follows.
It is already known that from May to the end of June, the Kremlin threw 28,000 bayonets into the war against Ukraine, an average of 9,000 per month.
In the temporarily occupied Donbas, from the end of February to the beginning of July, the Rashists recruited 70,000 so-called “mobics” , an average of 14,000 people per month.
And here a rather unhappy conclusion suggests itself. If his campaign to form “volunteer battalions” in the regions suddenly “fails” in the Russian Federation, the Kremlin will start pouring out even more virtual threats about the transition to “total mobilization.” But at the same time, it will only increase the flywheel of forced mobilization in the temporarily occupied areas of the East and South of Ukraine, which will require minimal costs from the economy of the Russian Federation.
