The BBC spoke to residents of the occupied Kherson region who had been tortured by the Russians. Here are their stories:

Aleksandr Huz

After the Russians occupied the village, Russian soldiers detained him. “They tied one rope around the neck and the other around wrists,” he recalls. During the interrogation, they forced him to stand with his legs wide apart. When I did not answer them, they would hit me between my legs. When I fell, I started to suffocate. When you try to get up, they hit you. Then they ask you again.”

Oleg Baturin

A few days after the capture of Kherson, the man was abducted. “They shouted, ‘On your knees!” he says. They blindfolded me… and put my hands behind my back. They hit my back, my ribs, and my legs… They kicked me and hit me with a rifle butt.
It was only after visiting a doctor that Oleg realized four of his ribs were broken. He says he was detained for eight days. All that time he heard other prisoners being questioned and witnessed the young man’s mock execution.
